I've Been Watching Him

>> Friday, September 16, 2011

I can't stand having to hear random stranger's opinions. Yes, this is one of THOSE blog posts.

I know I mentioned it a few times back when I was pregnant with Xavier but I haven't talked about the annoying comments since I've had him. If you think that after you have a baby people will suddenly stop giving you advice, you're wrong. I have come to find out that having an infant with you makes the comments fly at you even more frequently. For the most part, I've been good about letting those comments roll off of my back. Today, however, I was really struck by a stranger's comment.

"I've been watching him, and he's not as happy as you think he is." That is what this woman said to me. He hadn't been crying. In fact, he had been quite content the entire time we were at this particular place. What was she getting at? I'm a bad mom? I don't know how to meet my child's needs? She can see through he seriousness and see that deep down he dislikes me? Come on, lady.

I've tried my best. I ate a strict diet while I was pregnant, I didn't use any pain medication while having him because I thought that would be for his greater benefit, I've exclusively nursed him, I've used cloth diapers because I feel they are more comfortable for him, I console him when he cries, and on and on it goes. I don't need to justify myself to this random stranger, do I? Maybe it's just because I'm a first time mom that I'm so shaken by this woman's comment because I do know that I'm a good mom and I wish that the world could be perfect for my baby but I know it's not. I ended up spending my entire afternoon questioning everything that I do as a mother. Should I be doing A instead of B? Do I spend enough time doing this or that? It wasn't until I found myself crying over this person's comment that I snapped back to reality.

A good friend of mine (shout out KP) sent me this post from a blog that she reads that was so fitting and really helped me feel better. I am all for having the support of other mothers and getting advice from each other is so important. Let's not tear each other down though, shall we? If making others feel horrible and pretending it's helpful advice brings you some kind of joy then I think that's really sad.

Guess What?

>> Tuesday, September 13, 2011

I stink at blogging. Shock, I know. So a month later, here is Xavier's 3 month post.

So, obviously he gets cuter by the second. I seriously can't get enough of this kid. Here's what he's been up to:

- He hates his bassinet
- His hair is getting a little red tinge to it
- He's making all kinds of noises and yells often
- He can half way roll from his back to tummy
- He's on the verge of laughing
- He can completely hold his head up and almost has total control over it
- He grabbed a stuffed animal that I held in front of him but that may or may not have been by accident because he hasn't done it again since

Dan and I just love him so much. He wakes up in the morning with a huge smile and it's just the best thing ever. We couldn't love being his parents more.

That's it for now, see ya again in a month ; )

2 Months Old!

>> Monday, August 15, 2011

I can't believe that my little guy is 2 months old already! I wish I could just stop time because he is so precious and I can't get enough of him! Here is an update on Xavier at this age:

-He's really smiley when he wakes up in the morning
-He sleeps at least 6 hours straight most nights
-He LOVES being outside
-He's still very serious and always thinking
-He loves being swaddled because when he isn't swaddled he tends to fling his arms around and hits himself in the face
-He gets made when Louie barks
-He enjoys classical music
-He's so handsome : )

6 Weeks

>> Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Xavier is 6 weeks old! I can't believe how quickly time is already flying by! He had his 6 week check-up yesterday and the doctor said that he's perfect. Here were his stats:

Weight: 12 lbs. 4 oz. (90th percentile)
Length: 23/3 in. (90th percentile)
Head Circumference: 50th percentile (they didn't tell me the actual measurement)

So we have a big boy with an average sized head which is what I expected.

Here are some more facts about Xavier at this age:

-He started smiling and cooing this week!
-He seems to have a very serious personality and doesn't like any nonsense.
-He is now wearing 6 month clothing which I think it's partly because we have him in really bulky cloth diapers (that are adorable by the way).
-We aren't even close to having a routine but I've gotten pretty good at anticipating when he'll be sleeping and when he'll want to eat (even though those are at totally different times everyday). He has been going to bed between 10:30 and 11:30 every night which is the closest thing that we have to a schedule. He has been sleeping for at least 4 hours straight for the past few nights which has been really nice!
-We think he might be a soccer player when he grows up because he has really strong kicking legs that are always going.
-He is starting to grab things like Dan's tie or my hair and not let go!
-He gets cuter by the minute : )

Postpartum Depression

I think Louie is experiencing a mild case of the baby blues. He didn't eat for a week after we brought Xavier home, poor guy! Today is his 2nd birthday and I'm going to try to take him to DQ for a doggie ice cream. Hopefully that will cheer him up a little bit. He's no longer the baby of the family but we still love him so much. He really has been great with Xavier and before long he'll be getting more attention.
